Accident Today was pretty scary. I saw someone get knocked down, and it has shaken me up quite a bit. I was just walking along from Tescos to halls, when I saw a van turn around a corner and then suddenly stop, and when I looked I could see a bike under it, then I spotted a woman too. I was at the other side of the road and a small bit down, so by the time I realised what had happened loads of people had already run over and a girl was ringing the police. A few things went through my mind - stay and try and help or leave? I noticed that one of the guys who had run over in the first place was really taking comtrol, and seemed to know what he was doing, and also that the woman who had been hit was trying to sit up, which meant that she wasnt too badly injured. A crowd was beginning to form at this point (as it was a relatively busy road) so I decided to leave, as I know that a crowd in situations like that are a bad thing and could really cause the woman to panic, so I left when I was sure she would be okay (as in I could see she was concious and there were lots of people around her who were helping). Thinking back I wonder if I could have helped if I had been the one closer to the place when it happened, and I'm not so sure. I mean, I have all the first aid training to deal with injuries, but I'm not so sure I would have remembered it all under a stressful situation. Plus it had been quite a few months since I did any practice, so that's quite worrying. And most of the things I know are to do with water-baised incidents as opposed to road ones. But surely the basic principles are the same? It is scary to think that although I have been taught everything I need to know to deal with situations like that, I may not have been able to cope and may have made a mistake if I had been the one dealing with her. To be honest, I froze when it happened, and my mind just went blank and I didn't know what to do. It was only for a few seconds, but in that time several people had already run over to her. They say that when you witness your first incident (and by 'they' I mean the people who taught me on the lifeguard course) you freeze up, which is very true. I mean, when working at the swimming pool the first time (and well only time) I had to pull a kid out of the water, I froze for a few seconds while my brain tried to figure out what was happening. Luckily it started working pretty quickly, and I was able to get the kid out using just the pole and I didn't have to jump in after her, so it was all okay. But what if I always freeze when there is an incident? That is very scary to think about, so I am definatly going to re-read all my first aid notes in my lifeguard manual at some point over the next few days, just to reassure myself that I know it all. I have run it all through in my head (ie the procedures) and I do remember all the thoery, it is just a question of if I can act on instinct. I do freeze up when I get scared - some people get adrenaline rushes and are able to work faster, but I freeze. Even things like exam results - I freeze before I can force myself to look at them. It really isn't a good trait to have, and I really need to try and overcome it. But I am not entirely sure how. I am not subject to very many scary things, so I guess my body just doesn't know how to deal with it. Anyway, I have definatly talked enough here and I not have a really bad headache as I am exhausted, so I am going to go to bed. Night night everyone, and take care. love you all, -Kayleigh xxx
